One of the most frantic periods of the year for the National Basketball Association has come and gone. The NBA trade deadline always provides much-needed energy to the dog days of basketball, and this year it proved to be quite entertaining. Two weeks ago, I covered the implications of the Trae Young trade that occurred last month. Here are three more big-time moves that will alter the trajectory of multiple franchises.

Grizzlies Trade Jaren Jackson Jr. to Jazz for Players, Picks

In this deal, the Utah Jazz acquired Jaren Jackson Jr., Vince Williams Jr., Jock Landale, and John Konchar. On the flip side, Memphis received Walter Clayton Jr., Kyle Anderson, Taylor Hendricks, Georges Niang, and three first-round picks.

For the past eight seasons, Jaren Jackson Jr. has been an elite defender and stretch big for Memphis, winning Defensive Player of the Year in 2023. With Walker Kessler out for the year, Jackson Jr. will fill his role as the shot-blocking savant. Jackson Jr. will also now play alongside fellow 7-foot sniper Lauri Markkanen and breakout point guard Kyontae George. It will be interesting to see how this trio complements each other, and if they can help the Jazz dance to a playoff appearance in the near future.

Although this trade probably stings for current Grizzlies fans, the future is looking quite bright for the next generation of supporters. Last off-season, Memphis traded Desmond Bane for a whopping four future first-round picks. With the Jackson Jr. trade, they gained an additional three first-rounders, two of them coming in 2027 and one in 2031. To go further, they acquired 18th overall pick Walter Clayton Jr., who has a promising skillset despite playing limited minutes this year. This trade notably puts Ja Morant’s future up in the air, as Memphis is continuously blowing the team up.

Mavericks Trade Anthony Davis to Wizards for Players, Picks

In this deal, Washington gets Anthony Davis, D’Angelo Russell, Jaden Hardy, and Dante Exum. In return, Dallas receives Khris Middleton, AJ Johnson, Malaki Branham, Marvin Bagley III, two first-round picks, and three second-round picks.

Anthony Davis’s tenure with Dallas was nothing short of disastrous. After shockingly being dealt for Luka Dončić last year, Davis only suited up 29 times for the Mavericks. Injuries have constantly plagued the 10-time All-Star, and the Mavericks decided to cut ties while his value was still high. Dallas is clearly looking to rebuild their future around Cooper Flagg, and they now hold a 2026 and 2030 first-round pick.

Much like the Trae Young acquisition, this is a low-risk, high-reward move for the Wizards. Davis and Young are both dealing with injuries, and these trades were orchestrated so they could strive to be a higher seed next year. If—and this is a really big if—Davis is healthy next season, he and Young could be a nice duo in Washington, and it will give the fans something to look forward to. Additionally, Davis’s presence could be crucial for the development of Alex Sarr, Washington’s up-and-coming French big man.

Clippers Trade James Harden to Cavaliers for Darius Garland

After recently expressing dissatisfaction with the Clippers, James Harden now finds himself in Cleveland; this is the fourth time in six years that “The Beard” has been traded. While Harden is no longer the MVP candidate he once was, he still plays at an elite level, averaging 25.4 points per game this year. With his transition to Cleveland, we should expect to see Harden as more of a distributor, with Donovan Mitchell being their main scoring threat. This move will definitely benefit Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley, as Harden is famous for accurate alley-oop and slip-screen passes.

In return for Harden, the Clippers acquired Darius Garland and a future second-rounder. After being selected 5th overall and spending six-and-a-half years with Cleveland, Garland now finds himself with a fresh start in LA. Overall, this is an optimistic move for the Clippers. They now have a point guard ten years younger than Harden, who has always been a reliable facilitator. The main concern becomes if LA can adjust their offense and maintain the elite run they were on in January, where they went 11-4.
