In an ESPN report earlier this week, it was revealed that eight-time Super Bowl-winning coach Bill Belichick would not be a first-ballot Hall of Famer.

Belichick needed 40 out of 50 votes in order to be inducted into Canton, Ohio’s Pro Football Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility, but reportedly failed to reach this threshold. The long-time head coach of the New England Patriots was widely seen as a shoo-in for the Hall of Fame, winning six Super Bowls with the Patriots and an additional two as defensive coordinator for the New York Giants, but evidently, the Hall of Fame voting committee, composed of veteran football reporters and former coaches and general managers, disagreed.

The ESPN report mentions that Bill Polian, the former general manager of the Buffalo Bills and Indianapolis Colts and a member of the voting committee, may have been behind Belichick being snubbed; Polian allegedly told his fellow voters that Belichick ought to be made to “wait a year” due to his involvement in the 2007 Spygate cheating scandal. Polian denied telling his fellow voters anything of the sort, but claimed he did not remember whether or not he voted for Belichick.

Despite his involvement in Spygate, Belichick’s NFL career is certainly legendary; no current or future coach will easily be able to match his success. Including playoffs, Belichick’s all-time record stands at 333-178, second only to Don Shula’s 347 career victories. His 17 division titles, 9 conference championships, 31 playoff wins, and 6 Super Bowl titles all rank first among head coaches in the Super Bowl era.

The Internet – and the sports world as a whole – were outraged by the snub.

“I don’t understand it,” Tom Brady, with whom Belichick won six Super Bowls in 20 years, said. “If he’s not a first-ballot Hall of Famer, there’s really no coach that should ever be a first-ballot Hall of Famer.”

“I strongly believe Bill Belichick’s record and body of work speak for themselves,” Patriots owner Robert Kraft, who is also eligible for the Hall of Fame this year, said in a statement. “He is the greatest coach of all time and he unequivocally deserves to be a unanimous first-ballot Pro Football Hall of Famer.”

“There is not a single world whatsoever in which Bill Belichick should not be a First-Ballot Hall of Famer,” legendary defensive tackle and current CBS analyst JJ Watt said in a post on X. In an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, Watt continued, “If you have Bill Belichick not making the Pro Football Hall of Fame, you should not have a vote for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.”

Current and former players, former coaches, and fans alike were all in dismay at the Hall of Fame voting committee’s decision, with some even going so far as to demand that the votes be made public. While that likely will not happen, it must be said that the sports world is looking at Bill Belichick in a much more positive light than it has been in recent months.

Belichick, currently the head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels, went 4-8 in a rather underwhelming first season. Paired with his controversial 24-year-old girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, who was the centerpiece of an episode of popular sports journalism podcast Pablo Torre Finds Out, Belichick has not been presented particularly favorably by the media.

In light of recent events, however, Belichick is being presented in a much more favorable light.
“I never would’ve thought that the sports figure to unite all of Twitter [X] and temporarily end our deep division would be this guy,” user @JimmyTraina said in a post on X.
