Cardinal Sports Report: September 18 to September 24

Men’s Golf competed in the Susquehanna Fall Invitational last Thursday. Their 304 (+24) team score was enough to secure third place out of fourteen teams. Juniors Matthes Dietl and Joe Earley finished in the top ten, finishing sixth and tenth respectively. Dietl’s 74 (+4) score matched his career low. The Cardinals return to action this Saturday, September 27, as they host the Cardinal Fall Classic at Black Rock Golf Course.
Volleyball celebrated Senior Day last Saturday with a tri-match against Mount Aloysius and Dickinson. Prior to the games, seniors Erin Faughnan and Tanya Sichling were recognized for their contributions to the Catholic volleyball program. The Cardinals needed all five sets to beat Mount Aloysius 3-2, and fell after four sets to Dickinson by a score of 1-3. On Wednesday night, Catholic hosted Gettysburg and again fell after four sets, 1-3. The Cardinals’ next match is this Friday, September 26, at home against Lynchburg.
Football traveled to Franklin & Marshall for their second consecutive road game. The Cardinals’ only scoring drive of the game came in the fourth quarter. Between short rushes and short pass completions, the Cardinals drove down the field, sealing the drive with a one-yard rushing touchdown by freshman quarterback Brady McBride. The game ended 7-42. The Cardinals return to action this Saturday, September 27, at home against #8 Salisbury.
Men’s Soccer hosted Stockton last Saturday. Senior Ben Zimmer found the back of the net early in the game, but Stockton found an equalizer in the second half. The game ended 1-1, and the Cardinals’ unbeaten season continued. Zimmer was named the Landmark Conference Offensive Athlete of the Week for his performance. On Wednesday night, Catholic hosted North Carolina Wesleyan. Senior Holden Woodings scored twice, and freshmen Carson Shamoo and Andreas Shaboo each scored once. Shaboo’s goal was the first of his collegiate career. The 4-0 win ended the Cardinals’ three-game draw streak, and the undefeated season stayed alive. This Saturday, September 27, Catholic will host Lycoming in their first conference matchup of the season.
Women’s Soccer went on the road last Saturday to face Shenandoah. Junior Katie Scully found the back of the net in the thirty-fourth minute, and the Cardinals won 1-0. On Wednesday night, visited #3 Christopher Newport. Despite a strong defensive effort, the Cardinals fell 0-1. They will host Lycoming in their first conference matchup of the season this Saturday, September 27.
Field Hockey hosted Washington College last Saturday. The Cardinals had several chances throughout the game, but were unable to convert and fell 0-2. Catholic’s game Wednesday night against #4 Salisbury was cancelled, and they are set to return to action this Saturday, September 27, on the road against Lycoming.
Men’s Tennis continued their win streak on the road at Elizabethtown. The Cardinals finished with their third consecutive 7-0 clean sweep victory, winning all three doubles matches and all six singles matches. The Cardinals return to action at home against Frostburg on October 11 and next weekend at the ITA Regionals.
Women’s Tennis also continued their win streak on the road at Elizabethtown. The Cardinals swept all three doubles matches and all six singles matches for a 7-0 clean sweep victory. With juniors Mairead O’Hara and Ava Niggemeier’s doubles win, Niggemeier reached her fiftieth career win. O’Hara reached the same milestone with her singles win. The Cardinals will host Frostburg on October 11.
