With the fall of the Kang Dynasty before it even began, Marvel had to shift its focus fast to find a worthy villain to cap off the Multiverse Saga with. This eventually led to a huge announcement at the 2024 comic-con with the announcement that Doctor Doom would not only be the villain, but that he will also be played by former Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr. The film also sees the return of veteran MCU directors Anthony and Joe Russo, most notable for Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Avengers: Endgame.
They are not the only returning faces though as a casting announcement on March 26th confirmed many returning faces for this new entry. One nice surprise was to see the return of Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston, hopefully teasing a reunion for their respective characters. While it was also puzzling to see the announcements of the Thunderbolts and Fantastic Four casts making an appearance, the big highlight was the return of the original X-Men cast from the 2000s.
Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellan, James Marsden and Rebecca Romjin all return from the original 2000 film. Even other surprise X-Men castings emerged with the return of Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler and Channing Tatum as Gambit, which might be the same one seen in Deadpool & Wolverine. Even Kelsey Grammer is returning as Beast, which might signal a continuation of the post-credit scene from The Marvels.
The actual announcement broke numerous records, drawing in an astounding 275 million viewers throughout its entire 6 hour duration. The real kicker was Marvel Studios taking to their social media feeds to say, “there’s always room for more.” This confirms that more casting announcements are on the way, especially when considering how many other notable Avengers were left out of the casting announcement.
While it made sense for Shuri and other Wakandans to be announced, we have not heard word of Hawkeye actor Jeremy Renner or even Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk to be confirmed either. The only one that clearly has an excuse is Tom Holland, especially with him currently starring in both the Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. As far as the rest of the casting goes, the answer might lie in the original script for the now canned Avengers: Kang Dynasty.
When penning the original script, writer Jeff Loveness confirmed that his favorite character he was writing for at the time was Namor. With Namor actor Tenoch Huerta Mejía now confirmed to be in Avengers: Doomsday, it does raise the question of how much of the original script will be carried over? With Doctor Doom now serving as the main antagonist, fans have been speculating about what this next film will look like.
Considering how Doctor Doom is now leading the way to Secret Wars, it almost seems like Marvel is drawing from the classic 1984 Secret Wars comic which featured Doom as the titular villain. Whether this will be the case or not is unknown, but it could at least point to a good direction for the films to go in. With the Multiverse Saga soon drawing to a close, it now seems clear that “the Marvel Fatigue” is over and audiences are ready to see this all collide on the big screen next year.
Avengers: Doomsday will release in theaters May 2nd, 2026.
