Men’s Basketball squared off with Wilkes in the Landmark Conference Semifinal on Thursday. This was a feisty match throughout, with players from both teams diving for loose balls and fans pleading for fouls. Senior guards CJ Ruoff and Brian Herbert each scored 16 points for Catholic. Sophomore guard Peter Gellene pulled off the highlight of the game, breaking his opponent’s ankles with a filthy crossover eurostep in the second half. Unfortunately, the Colonels were able to hit clutch shots down the stretch, and fourth-seeded Wilkes handed first-seeded Catholic a 79-70 upset loss. Despite the loss, Catholic qualified for the NCAA Tournament as an at-large bid with a 19-7 overall record, going 15-3 in Landmark Conference play. The Cards have qualified for the tournament for three consecutive seasons and reached the Elite Eight in last year’s NCAA Tournament, before falling to eventual national champions, Trinity. The Cardinals will look to rebound in the first round of the tournament on March 6 against Western Connecticut. Catholic received several All-Landmark Conference honors.
