Catholic University’s Department of Public Safety is investigating multiple reports of cars being broken into near McMahon Hall.
In an email to the campus community sent Feb. 18, DPS said it was “made aware of several thefts from vehicles which occurred within several minutes” in the parking lot at McMahon Hall.
“This type of crime has not happened lately on our campus, so it is imperative that sound vehicle safety practices are followed at all times,” the email said. Investigators believe two vehicles were used by suspects in the incident and described them as a “white Hyundai Santa Fe with District of Columbia license plates: GN4282” and “a dark color sedan with Maryland license plates: 8GL5735.”
Kirk McLean, Associate Vice President for Public Safety and Emergency Management and Chief of Campus Police, told The Tower that his department “is taking this matter very seriously. The investigative components between DPS and the Metropolitan Police Department have been in communication with each other for the purpose of information sharing and to track down all leads. We are hopeful that an eventual arrest will occur and that those responsible are held accountable. “
At least five vehicles were broken into, according to DPS police reports. Nothing was taken from the vehicles, but they were rummaged through. Most of the cars had their front passenger window smashed by the suspects to gain entry.
DPS recommends that all members of the community report suspicious activity and individuals, keep valuables out of sight in their cars, take important items with them or lock them in the trunk, and lock their vehicles.
Anyone with information should call DPS at 202-319-5111.
