It is hard to believe children were trick-or-treating a week ago, now that Mariah Carey is blasting on the radio and Christmas decorations are already being put up. Many horror fans are still reeling from the loss, with some even extending their celebrations during the weekend, or “Hallo-weekend,” as some even call it. It seemed that Hollywood was eager to get horror fans in the mood for the holidays, especially with Paramount dropping the first trailer for the highly anticipated Scream 7 on October 30, 2025.

The film itself has had a rough production, with numerous directors exiting the project for various reasons. Scream VI directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett had to depart early due to scheduling conflicts with another film, Abigail, prompting Paramount to hire Christopher Landon in their absence. More problems would arise in the following months, with pre-production suspended in July 2023 following the SAG-AFTRA strike.

By November of the same year, the film began to unravel, with the main star, Melissa Barrera, being fired due to her comments on the Israel-Hamas War. Barrera’s co-star, Jenna Ortega, would exit the project following this due to the changes in the creative team and the cast overall. With Ortega and Barrera out of the picture, director Christopher Landon also decided to exit the project the following month.

“There was no movie anymore. The whole script was about her [Melissa Barrera],” Landon explained. “I didn’t sign on to make a ‘Scream’ movie. I signed on to make that movie. When that movie no longer existed, I moved on.”

The film would ultimately go through a creative retooling due to these sudden changes, with original Scream star Neve Campbell confirmed to be returning in March 2024. Neve Campbell had starred in all the films except the one prior, due to a pay dispute with Paramount. That issue has since been resolved, with Campbell even making the announcement on her own Instagram page.

Deadline also confirmed that the new film would be directed by Kevin Williamson, co-writing the script with Guy Busick, who previously worked on Scream VI with writer James Vanderbilt. Williamson wrote the script for the original Scream in 1994, returning as a writer for Scream 2 in 1995 and remaining as a producer following every entry since then. This film marks Williamson’s first time in the director’s chair for the series, with him only directing one film prior, the dark comedy Teaching Mrs. Tingle, back in 2006.

The following months would reveal multiple stars from the previous films, such as Courtney Cox, Mason Gooding, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Roger L. Jackson, who would be returning. Additional cast members David Arquette, Scott Foley, and Matthew Lillard surprisingly returned, especially considering how all their characters were supposedly murdered in the previous films. New additions such as Isabel May, McKenna Grace, Joel McHale, and Celeste O’Connor were revealed to be involved in the film as time went on.

The first Scream from 1996 was revolutionary at the time of its release, with the script by Kevin Williamson cleverly poking fun at the tropes typical of horror films from the 1980s. The meta humor and charming cast really struck a chord with viewers at the time, with many of the entries finding clever ways of expanding on the original’s simple but brilliant premise. The first trailer for the latest film does not reveal much, but the involvement of Williamson and Campbell is likely more than enough to get many fans excited to return to the franchise once more.

Scream 7 will be released in theaters on February 27, 2026.
