This year has had an incredible run for Stephen King adaptations, each one boasting a memorable story and visual flair all its own. While It: Welcome to Derry is on the way to close out the Halloween season, it seems that we are ready to close out this year’s long run of Stephen King adaptations with Edgar Wright’s take on King’s incredibly underrated novel, The Running Man! The 1982 novel was loosely adapted into the Arnold Schwarzenegger led film in 1987, with much more emphasis on action and drama than the dry wit and darker commentary the book was perhaps better known for.

Wright, perhaps more well-known for writing and directing films like Baby Driver, Shaun of the Dead, and Scott Pilgrim vs the World, revealed back in 2017 how if he was gonna remake any movie, it would be The Running Man. He even made it clear how his film was not gonna be a remake of the 1987 film, but instead have it be a much more faithful adaptation of the novel instead. Wright signed on to develop the film for Paramount back in 2021, with him co-writing the script with his Scott Pilgrim vs the World co-writer, Michael Bacall.

Simon Kinberg and Audrey Chon were announced as producers for the film, under Kinberg’s production company, Genre Films. Frequent collaborator Nira Park also joined as a producer for the project, with Domain Entertainment revealed to co-financing the film with Paramount. Glen Powell cast in the lead role by April of 2024, and additional cast members like Michael Cera, Lee Pace, Josh Brolin and Colman Domingo were revealed to be involved in the following months.

Principal photography began in the United Kingdom on November 4, 2024, with filming primarily taking place in London. The cast and crew even spent one week filming an extensive action sequence at Wembley Stadium as well. The film wrapped filming on March 28, 2025, providing plenty of time for post-production. Lucasfilm’s Industrial Light & Magic provided the VFX for the film, with Paul Machliss serving as the editor, marking his fifth collaboration with Edgar Wright.

The first footage from the film was showcased at Cinemacon on April 3, 2025, introduced at a panel by Colman Domingo who shared the stage with Powell, Wright, and Brolin. While this footage was not released to the public, we would get our first glimpse at the film when the first trailer dropped online on July 1, 2025. The trailer featured a remix of “Underdog” by Sly and the Family Stone, showcasing Wright’s dark wit contrasted with the gritty and almost bleak atmosphere of this dystopian world.

On October 10, 2025, a panel for the film was featured at New York Comic Con, which featured appearances from Wright, Powell, and Lee Pace. They showcased 12 minutes of footage from the film, alongside a new trailer which dropped online not too long afterwards. The latest trailer featured a remix of “Don’t Bring Me Down” by Electric Light Orchestra, showcasing a lot more of the silly antics and action-packed scenes in the film.

The movie is set to release almost four years after Edgar Wright’s last film, Last Night in Soho, premiered in theaters. To this day, Wright still has an incredible track record with his films receiving critical praise and doing commercially well at the box office. This film also marks his first big studio project since his involvement in Marvel’s Ant-Man film back in 2015. With post-production already completed, fans can be sure to catch Wright’s latest film just in time for Thanksgiving next month!

The Running Man will be released in theaters November 14, 2025.
