On September 10, 2025, political activist Charlie Kirk was shot at Utah Valley University (UVU). Just a few hours later, it was confirmed that the incident was fatal and Kirk had passed away.

Kirk, a thirty-one-year-old conservative activist, was known for going to colleges and universities across the country where he would speak, challenge, and debate with students. Kirk was doing exactly that when he visited UVU, beginning “The American Comeback Tour.” His tour was supported by his non-profit organization, Turning Point USA, which focuses on promoting conservative politics in high schools and colleges.

The activist had just gotten to the well-known portion of his college visits called “Prove Me Wrong,” during which audience members could step forward to challenge his political opinions and cultural views.

The conversation turned to mass shootings when a shot was fired from about 200 yards away. Charlie Kirk was hit in the neck and immediately rushed to the hospital in critical condition. A few short hours later, the young husband and father was pronounced dead.

After the shot was fired, UVU campus police were seen evacuating the campus in order to conduct a manhunt in search of the shooter. A university statement on X announced that the campus was closed and classes were cancelled, and encouraged those on campus to remain in place until law enforcement could escort them off campus.

Two suspects were eventually taken into custody, but were released after it was determined that neither had ties with the shooting. One was later charged with obstructing university police.

At the time of writing, the investigation and the manhunt for the shooter is ongoing.

Prior to the event, there had been some dissent among UVU students regarding Kirk’s presence on campus. Nearly one thousand students signed a petition in hopes that the university would reconsider the decision to allow the conservative activist to speak at the school. However, the school ignored the petition, stating that he had the right to speak under the First Amendment. Despite the divided feelings that Charlie Kirk had produced on campus, about three thousand people attended the event to see him.

Various political figures took to social media to express their feelings on the tragedy. Kirk was a longtime ally of President Donald Trump, and the Chief Executive made it clear today.

Soon after Kirk’s death was announced, President Trump posted on Truth Social, “The Great, and even Legendary Charlie Kirk, is dead. No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us. Melania and my Sympathies go out to his beautiful wife Erika, and family. Charlie, we love you.”

Vice President JD Vance also called for prayers for his family in a post on X.

Conservatives were not the only ones denouncing the murder; members of both the Democratic and Republican Parties criticized the attack and called for an end to political violence. Former Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden each posted statements on X declaring that political violence had no place in America.

The rest of the world is also sending their prayers and regret for today’s events as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Italian Prime minister Giorgia Meloni, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer denounce the political violence that was seen in Utah.

Kirk is survived by his wife, Erika, and their two children.
