While many fans were left in tears following No Way Home’s dramatic ending, many questions were still left unanswered about whetherSpider-Man himself would ever make a real return to the MCU following the 2019 legal troubles with Disney and Sony. While a sequel was confirmed to be in early development in 2023, it was uncertain which direction the film would go in as both studios had different plans for the project. Then the Writer’s Guild of America strike stalled any real plans though, leaving the character in limbo once again.
While work resumed following the end of the strike, no real announcements were made until Deadline reported the film landed Shang-Chi director, Destin Daniel Cretton, to helm the project in September of 2024. It was also confirmed that Chris McKenna and Erick Sommers would return to pen the script, with Sony revealing the film’s title to be Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Tom Holland was confirmed to be returning to the titular role with filming scheduled to begin the following summer.
More announcements soon followed with Zendaya and Jacob Batalon confirmed to be involved in June of 2025. It was soon confirmed that Jon Bernthal would be arriving in his big-screen debut as the Punisher, following his involvement with the series Daredevil: Born Again and his untitled Disney+ special. This was soon followed the next month with Mark Ruffalo returning as the Hulk alongside Michael Mando as Scorpion, who was last seen in the post credits scene of Spider-Man: Homecoming.
When filming began on August 2, 2025, Sony and Marvel were quick to celebrate the occasion by posting a video of Tom Holland wearing the new Spider-Man suit in a surprise reveal to fans. This was quickly followed up with another video, showing Tom Holland greeting fans on his first day as he meets up with Cretton to begin filming. The video also shows an emphasis on more practical stunts and action set-pieces, with Holland’s stunt double swinging through the streets of Glasgow and even riding on top of a military-style tank!
Audiences soon got word that Jackie Chan and his stunt-team would be coordinating the stunts, choreographing the fight scenes for the film. Now, while story details have been kept very quiet, the casting seems to suggest that Spider-Man and the Punisher will butt heads over their crime-fighting ideologies as they run amuck in New York City. There are also reports suggesting that the Hulk will be rampaging in the city, with all three possibly working together to confront Scorpion.
Especially now that Avengers: Doomsday has been delayed to December 18, 2026, it is unclear exactly how it will tie into the events of the film, with conflicting reports suggesting Tom Holland will be involved in the production of Avengers: Doomsday. While it is highly unlikely that he is not involved in the film, there have also been some reports suggesting that Florence Pugh will be reprising her role as Yelena Belova in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
With her character last seen stationed with the New Avengers in New York City area at the end of Thunderbolts*, it does make sense that her or her team are involved in some capacity and could help tie in better to Doomsday. While these reports have yet to be confirmed, it does seem likely that this theory could hold some truth as to what will be revealed in the finished film. As production continues, fans can look forward to seeing the movie next summer and have fun theorizing how it all connects to Avengers: Doomsday.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day will release in theaters July 31, 2026.
