Welcome to this week’s crime blotter. The week started off busy, including some action on campus. The Department of Public Safety disseminated a second alert to the campus community regarding car break ins on and near campus; DPS said they have deployed undercover officers, are working with MPD special assignment units, and are reviewing video footage to find suspect information.
DPS was also involved in another case, this one on Tuesday, January 28. According to MPD, a 17-year old suspect snatched the victim’s phone on Michigan Ave., NE, on the south side of campus and fled the scene. Kirk McLean, university Associate Vice President for Public Safety and Emergency Management and Campus Police chief, said his officers were given a suspect description.
“After learning this information, Sergeant Shah and Lieutenant Coley immediately observed the described suspect running on Taylor Street, and they were able to quickly apprehend the juvenile suspect,” said McLean. He added that the suspect was subsequently identified by the victim and turned over to MPD for processing and follow-up investigation.
