Suspects Drive Van Into CVS, Burglarize It: Weekly Crime Blotter

This is the weekly crime report for the week of March 25 – March 31, 2024. This report lists all incidents that were reported on or nearby campus. It draws information only from official police reports, statements, and records. Suspects are unknown unless otherwise noted.

Monday, March 25

  • Stolen Car: A parked car in the 2900 block of 7th St NE was stolen. It is described as a gray Hyundai Elantra.
  • Stolen Car: A car parked in front of the Monroe Street Cornerstone Apartments was stolen overnight. It was later found by police.
  • Stolen Car: Police took a delayed report of a car stolen from the 600 block of Monroe Street that was initially taken on March 20. It is described as a blue Kia Forte.

Tuesday, March 26

  • Car Break-In: At 4:30 pm, a parked car in the 4500 block of Clermont Dr NE, just west of the DuFour Center, was broken into. An iPhone and paperwork were stolen.

Wednesday, March 27

  • Unarmed Robbery: At 11:55 am, a woman was standing at the bus stop on 10th St NE and Randolph St NE when a suspect charged at her and grabbed her purse.
  • Office Theft: An office in the 4900 block of Puerto Rico Ave NE, adjacent to the DuFour Center, was illegally entered between 4 and 5 pm. Approximately $1500 worth of property was taken.
  • Stolen Car: A car parked on John McCormack Rd NE, adjacent to the DuFour Center, was stolen between 2 and 6:30 pm. It is described as a blue Ram 1500.
  • Assault, Theft: At 4:30 pm, a traffic accident occurred in the 600 block of Monroe Street. Two drivers got into a verbal argument and one of the drivers, Yordanos Ayalew, 43, assaulted the other as well as the other driver’s daughter. Ayalew also stole the other driver’s iPhone. She was arrested and charged with Simple Assault and Theft.

Thursday, March 28

  • Unarmed Carjacking: At 8:50 pm at the intersection of Jackson St NE and 12st St NE, two unarmed suspects pulled the victim out of her car and drove off in it. MPD officers located the vehicle later that night and arrested the two juvenile suspects.

Friday, March 29

  • Assault: Officers responded to the crime happening in the 100 block of Michigan Avenue, west of campus, and arrested Malik Smith, 32, for Simple Assault.

Saturday, March 30

  • Attempted Burglary: At 3:15 am, three suspects drove a dark-colored van through the front doors of the CVS on 12th Street and attempted to steal the ATM. They fled in the van after a few minutes and did not get access to the ATM’s money.
  • Stolen Car: A vehicle parked in the 3100 block of 8th St NE, 4 blocks south of campus, was stolen overnight. It is described as a red Kia Rio.

Sunday, March 31

  • DUI: A 55-year old woman was arrested in the 100 block of Michigan Avenue for driving under the influence.
