It is Cardinal Week at Catholic University and many students are thinking about who they are going to vote for Homecoming King and Queen after the announcement of the Cardinal Court. Program Board is hosting events everyday from September 23 through 26 leading up to the Cardinal Tailgate before the homecoming game.

“The main goal of Cardinal Week is trying to get the Catholic University community excited and just to fire up some spirit about being a Cardinal,” said Elizabeth Huggard, the programming chair who worked on Cardinal Week. “The whole week leads up to the homecoming game this Saturday.”

Program Board started off the exciting week by serving crab, shrimp, and mussels as well as BBQ pulled pork and veggie burgers at the Seafood Boil on Monday night. The Seafood Boil turned out to be a very popular event for students looking to get anything other than Pryz food on a weekday night.

“There was a great variety of food and it was really fun to feast with all of my friends,” said sophomore Tyler Farrar about the Seafood Boil.

The Seafood Boil brought in a record number of 667 students in attendance, 100 more than last year.

On Tuesday night, Program Board celebrated the announcement of nominees for Cardinal Court by distributing Captain Cookie ice cream sandwiches to the first 150 students who attended the event. They also set up an inflatable obstacle course for students to enjoy.

The nominees for Cardinal Court are: Elise LaFleur, Maya Escobar, Emily Sullivan, Sydney Walt, and Jean Sumner for the women and Brian Aberle, Jack Farley, Alex Ramirez, Michael Taylor, and Tom Thorp for the men. The winners will be announced during halftime of the Homecoming game on Saturday.

Program Board continues the exciting week with a bingo night, which is advertised as “Take a CHANCE on Bingo,” Tickets to the upcoming Chance the Rapper concert are being given away as one of the main prizes of the event.

“Flavors of Fall” on Thursday night is the last weekday event for Cardinal Week hosted by Program Board. This event includes “delicious fall-themed snacks such as hot apple cider, caramel apples, and apple cider donut bites,” according to the Nest. Program Board will also be handing out free slime and stress balls, designed to give stressed students a break from work.

Although Program Board will not be hosting an event on Friday, there will be the Homecoming Dance arranged by Campus Ministry, and Cardinal Fest that is being organized by Alumni Relations. Both events are expected to be exciting for both students and returning alumni.

“Out of all the events this week, I’m most excited for the Homecoming King and Queen to be crowned at the football game this Saturday,” said Huggard.

The whole week is intended to emphasize school spirit and help bring the community together. Student attendance is expected to continue to rise throughout the week, and many students and alumni are expected to be at the homecoming game this Saturday at 1:00 p.m against MIT.
