The Catholic University Women’s Basketball Team hosted Goucher College this Wednesday night at the DuFour Center. The ladies dominated the Gophers the entire match, leading by a commanding 43-26 at the half. A foul in the last minute led to two free throws by senior Emily O’Connor with 4.3 seconds left in the first half. The ladies used this lead to cruise to a 83-58 victory over Goucher College in a league game.

The Cardinals improve to 3-4 in the Landmark. Attendance was low but energetic, and they were encouraged by the bench. The bench was screaming tips and pointers for the girls  on the court. There where multiple fouls on both sides of the court with 18 fouls from the Gophers and 16 fouls from the Cardinals. Freshman Luca Mamula led the Cardinals with 28 points on the night. Megan Stafford was also hot that night with 14 points.

“We’ve done that so now we are focusing on solidifying our opportunity to make the postseason. There’s always something to improve on. We got caught on a couple of switches where we could have talked to each other and prevent some opportunities they got to go to the rim. We are going to clean some things up defensively and work on our rebounds but other than that pretty happy with how we played today” said coach Matt Donohue.

“As far as the depth of the team I think we our lucky to have a very strong bench, which you don’t always see with most teams. This really allows us to compete at a more intense and fast level and constantly be getting transition opportunities” said sophomore Maggie Rakowsky. Rakowsky posted 7 points, including a crucial 3-pointer.

“We’re in the thick of things right now. We’ve had some injury issues in the first half of the season, but we are getting healthier now and we’re at the halfway point of conference play and put ourselves in the position to make a postseason run” said Donohue

“From here we hope to continue to bring that same intensity in our second round of conference play and hopefully make playoffs! At the end of the day I hope that we can look back at our season and know that we are better than when we started” said Rakowsky.

The girls defeated Susquehanna this past Saturday 57-51, and the Men’s Basketball team also came up with a victory over Susquehanna 78-74. The Women’s Basketball team’s next game will be against the Moravian Greyhounds on Saturday, January 26 at 2pm.
