Wisconsin Primaries

Tuesday’s primaries in Wisconsin saw decisive victories for Bernie Sanders and Ted Cruz, earning 56.6% and 48.2% of the vote, respectively. The state of Wisconsin was a strategic one in the races for each party. Sander’s victory over Hillary Clinton is his sixth in a row, causing several pundits to speculate a possible resurgence in his campaign. Sanders is also expected to gain a victory in Wyoming’s caucus this Saturday, where 14 delegates are in play. After Wyoming, Sanders is looking ahead to the big prize of the New York primaries, where 247 delegates are at stake. In his victory speech, Sanders told voters: “Do not tell Secretary Clinton. She’s getting a little nervous… but I believe we’ve got an excellent chance to win New York and a lot of delegates in that state.” Despite Sanders’ string of impressive victories, Hillary Clinton is still expected to win in New York, where according to the Real Clear Politics average, Clinton is polling 11 points higher than Sanders. Ted Cruz won Wisconsin easily, especially after receiving an endorsement from the state’s governor (and former 2016 Presidential Candidate) Scott Walker. Cruz’s victory over Donald Trump in Wisconsin has led many to believe that the election has reached a new phase. Cruz said that he was very “encouraged after what was a terrific victory … in Wisconsin,” and that his victory over Trump marked a significant “turning point.” Cruz’s victory makes Trump’s path to 1,237 delegates and the Republican nomination that much more difficult. Despite the loss, Donald Trump is expected to win big in his home state of New York, where he is currently polling at 53%, according to the Real Clear Politics average. The New York primaries will be held on April 19th.
