September 24-30 Crime Blotter: Shooting, Multiple Robberies Near Campus; April Brookland-CUA Metro Murder Update; & More

As violent crime continues to go down across the country, it remains at concerning levels in Washington, although lower levels than last year.
September 24 saw two armed robbery attempts reported within an hour just off campus. One of the incidents, in the 200 block of Michigan Avenue, NE, a couple of blocks west of campus, involved a “member of the University community,” according to an email alert sent by the CUA Office of Emergency Management (OEM).
The victim, who is confirmed to be a Catholic University student, was able to flee without surrendering any property and escaped unharmed, according to MPD and OEM. The alert from OEM said that the Department of Public Safety (DPS) had increased patrols on the edge of campus and had asked the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) to increase patrol coverage in the area as well.
On Sunday, September 29, OEM reported a shooting in the area of 10th St., NE, and Michigan Ave., NE, near the Brookland-CUA Metro station at approximately 10:29 p.m. MPD reported that three suspects of unknown race(s) fled the scene wearing all black clothing and masks. In an email, an MPD spokesperson said the call was received at 9:51 p.m. and officers found an adult male with multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was conscious and breathing. No other information on the shooting was available. The incident, which happened at or near the metro station, did not result in an activation of the CUAlert system.
On Monday, September 30, another robbery occurred near campus, this time in the 3700 block of 12th St., NE, adjacent to the metro station, around 9:50 p.m. No other information was available and no campus or DC alert was issued.
Meanwhile, WJLA reported last week that the suspect in the April homicide shooting on the platform of the Brookland-CUA Metro station has been found mentally incompetent to stand trial. The suspect is a juvenile and has not been identified because he is charged with second degree murder, a crime that D.C. law does not permit juveniles to be tried as adults for. He will remain in custody for several more weeks as he attends classes and will be re-evaluated after that. The shooting claimed the life of 14-year old Avion Evans and sent CUA’s campus into an hours-long lockdown while officers searched for the suspect.
