CUA Softball Splits in Weekend Doubleheader
By Jimmy Cassidy
The Catholic University of America softball team split a Landmark doubleheader at Elizabethtown on Saturday, March 26th. Both games came down to the final innings, and each team left the field with a win. The Cardinals took game one, 2-1, in extra innings, but fell in the final inning of game two, 3-2.
Junior third baseman Erin Adams continued her recent hot streak, going a combined 4-for-6 with an RBI in each game.
Elizabethtown scored runs in the bottom of the seventh in each game. In the first contest, Adams came though with an RBI single that scored freshman infielder Hailey Horton, who doubled just two batters early to start the eighth inning.
Fellow freshman pitcher Kelly Lynch improved to 8-2 this season going the distance for the eighth time, allowing just one Blue Jay run. She scattered eight hits with five strikeouts. Lynch leads the Cardinals in all major pitching statistics, and has emerged as the ace for the CUA rotation.
Thanks to a two-run third inning that included another RBI single from Adams, Catholic looked to be in control. It was Elizabethtown with the late-inning comeback again however, as back-to-back hits after an error and a groundout led to just the fifth Cardinal loss of the season. The loss was a tough one for the visitors, but their overall record now stands at 13-5 on the year.
The Cardinals will return to the field Saturday, April 2nd for a doubleheader against Scranton, starting at 1 PM.
