Why should we, as a society, care about the topless pictures of Kim Kardashian & Company? What do we gain when we allow our focus to pinpoint a person who doesn’t deserve the adoration of our society? It seems every few days we see the next big thing that the Jenner/Kardashian tribe does to blow up our newsfeed and create the social debates and consensus that shapes the way our young people think.

It’s almost a right of passage for humanity nowadays that we support the cringeworthy beliefs of our celebrity idols, endlessly sharing and liking and retweeting the almost theological doctrines of Kanye West and the people that create the cultural landmarks that will one day define us as a society. The scary thing about our youthful fervor is that some of us don’t grow out of it and accept reality, instead devoting our lives to following the ideals of people who are richer, smarter, and better looking until we burn out or grow up.

People are dying of lead poisoning in Flint, Michigan, and there are people who are already putting a tragedy in their rearview and making the latest trends the news live and die by. Did you know the first picture of a chinese breed of rabbit was photographed for the first time in 20 years? Probably not, as Kanye hasn’t written his rare rabbit/adidas takedown song. What is the point of being socially conscious if society is becoming as inane and pointless as anything purporting to “Break the Internet” could be.

People should try and expand their perception. Whatever you do, try and find something new. It can be anything, any fact or any sort of new information that takes you outside of your usual awareness. There is no reason to throw your hat in with the biggest celebrity. If you have heard of the controversy of Bill Cosby, you might have heard that Kanye West recently put out a statement concerning his opinion of Cosby’s innocence. If this opinion has in any way helped you inform your opinion on the trial, or on the case of Cosby’s innocence, please take a moment and reevaluate your priorities, and try to expand your horizons, because a celebrity’s twitter is no place to find a worldview.
