Freshman Tyrica Edmonds-Miller served on Treasury Board as a liaison for her class this year. She first became interested in being a part of the board after hearing about it from the Black Students’ Alliance at Fall Festival. Hearing a club’s perspective about the strengths and weaknesses of the board encouraged her to join and try to make a difference for the student body. Edmonds-Miller is running for treasurer not only to “foster the community at Catholic, but to create a more transparent, diverse, and accessible treasury board for the student body.”

Her plans to do so include hosting meet and greets with the board a least once a semester. The meet and greets aim to familiarize students who may be new treasurers and are unfamiliar with the process of presenting before Treasury Board. This prevents students who may be filling a club’s vacancy in the middle of the year from being “left to figure [the process] out for themselves,” Edmonds-Miller said. Edmonds-Miller introduced the idea this year under the current treasurer, Monica Wallace, and it was successfully implemented this second semester.

Besides hosting meet and greets, Edmonds-Miller plans to increase advertising for the board at the beginning of the year. She hopes to bring awareness to all students, especially freshman, about the applications at the beginning of the year.

To encourage student feedback, Edmonds-Miller proposes an anonymous platform for students who present to the board.

“A lot of people have things they like about Treasury Board and things they were not as fond of,” Edmonds-Miller said. She believes it will be very beneficial for the students to have “a platform to express their opinions if they don’t necessarily feel comfortable walking up to one of the directors or their liaison.”

While Edmonds-Miller does have one year’s experience being on the board, it is important to consider whether her perspective as a freshman director is enough to effect the change Treasury Board needs in the eyes of the student organizations on campus.
